Part of the Phonemic Awareness skill progression -- 8 lessons, each building toward demonstrated mastery.

8 Lessons

What Your Child Will Learn

  1. 1

    Putting Sounds Together

Learn to blend sounds together to make words, starting with onset-rime blending before progressing to full phoneme blending.

Objective: Students will blend onset and rime to produce whole words using arm blending and connected phonation techniques.
    45 minutes
  2. 2

    Blending CVC Words

Progress from onset-rime blending to full phoneme blending with three individual sounds, using connected phonation and starting with continuant sounds.

Objective: Students will blend three individual phonemes into CVC words using connected phonation, starting with words that begin with continuant sounds.
    45 minutes
  3. 3

    More Blending Practice

Extended blending practice including words beginning with stop sounds, building fluency and automaticity with 3-sound blending.

Objective: Students will blend CVC words beginning with both continuant and stop sounds with increasing fluency and accuracy.
    45 minutes
  4. 4

    Breaking Words Apart

Learn to segment words into individual phonemes, starting with 2-phoneme words and progressing to CVC words using finger tapping technique.

Objective: Students will segment spoken words into individual phonemes using finger tapping, starting with 2-phoneme words and progressing to CVC words.
    45 minutes
  5. 5

    Segmenting with Sound Boxes

Use Elkonin sound boxes with counters to make phoneme segmentation concrete and visible, building a bridge to spelling.

Objective: Students will use Elkonin boxes and counters to segment CVC words, pushing one counter into each box for each phoneme heard.
    45 minutes
  6. 6

    More Segmenting Practice

Extended segmenting practice with CVC words containing all short vowels, building fluency and beginning to connect segmenting to spelling.

Objective: Students will segment CVC words with all five short vowels with increasing fluency, and begin connecting the segmented sounds to letter representations.
    45 minutes
  7. 7

    Blending and Segmenting Together

Connect blending and segmenting as reciprocal skills, practicing both with the same words and learning to switch flexibly between the two operations.

Objective: Students will demonstrate understanding that blending and segmenting are reciprocal skills by performing both operations on the same CVC words and switching flexibly between the two.
    45 minutes
  8. 8

    Review and Application

Consolidate blending and segmenting skills, apply them with letter tiles, and connect phonemic awareness to beginning phonics in preparation for the PA-2 checkpoint.

Objective: Students will demonstrate mastery of blending and segmenting by applying both skills flexibly, using letter tiles to connect sounds to letters, and preparing for the PA-2 checkpoint.
