R-Controlled AR

R-Controlled OR
Learn to decode words with the r-controlled vowel pattern OR, which makes the /or/ sound as in corn and storm.
Objective: Students will accurately decode words containing the r-controlled vowel OR by blending the or unit with other sounds, and distinguish OR from AR patterns.45 minutes - 3
R-Controlled ER, IR, UR
Learn that the r-controlled patterns ER, IR, and UR all make the same /er/ sound (schwa-r), as in her, bird, and turn.
Objective: Students will decode words containing ER, IR, and UR patterns, recognizing that all three spellings make the same /er/ sound.45 minutes - 4
Mixed R-Controlled Vowels
Practice distinguishing and fluently decoding all five r-controlled vowel patterns: ar, or, er, ir, ur.
Objective: Students will accurately and fluently decode words with any r-controlled vowel pattern (ar, or, er, ir, ur), using the vowel letter to determine which sound to produce.45 minutes - 5
Syllable Types Introduction: Closed and Open Syllables
Learn to identify closed and open syllable types by understanding how the vowel sound changes based on whether the syllable ends in a consonant or vowel.
Objective: Students will identify closed syllables (ending in a consonant with a short vowel) and open syllables (ending in a vowel with a long vowel), and use this knowledge to determine the vowel sound in single syllables and simple words.45 minutes - 6
Two-Syllable Words
Learn to divide and decode two-syllable words using the VCCV pattern, starting with compound words and progressing to closed + closed syllable words.
Objective: Students will divide two-syllable words at the VCCV pattern (between consonants), decode each syllable separately, and blend them together to read the whole word.45 minutes - 7
More Multi-Syllable
Practice decoding two-syllable words with varied syllable patterns including open syllables, closed syllables, and r-controlled syllables, using flexible division strategies.
Objective: Students will decode two-syllable words containing varied syllable types (open, closed, r-controlled) by flexibly applying syllable division strategies and adjusting when needed.45 minutes - 8
Review and Application
Consolidate all PH-5 skills in connected text, including r-controlled vowels (ar, or, er, ir, ur), syllable types, and multi-syllable word decoding, with emphasis on fluency, self-correction, and preparation for morphology.
Objective: Students will fluently read connected text containing r-controlled vowels and multi-syllable words, demonstrating self-correction strategies and readiness for PH-6 morphology instruction.45 minutes
