Learn the /oi/ sound spelled oi (middle of words) and oy (end of words).

Diphthongs: The ou and ow Patterns
Learn the /ou/ sound spelled ou (middle of words) and ow (end of words or before n/l).
Objective: Students will recognize that ou and ow can both make the /ou/ sound and decode words with these patterns.45 minutes - 3
Comparing Diphthongs: /oi/ vs /ou/
Practice discriminating between /oi/ (oi/oy) and /ou/ (ou/ow) diphthongs.
Objective: Students will discriminate between /oi/ and /ou/ sounds and accurately read words with all four diphthong spellings (oi, oy, ou, ow).45 minutes - 4
The Two Sounds of oo
Learn that oo can make two different sounds: long /oo/ (moon) and short /oo/ (book).
Objective: Students will recognize that oo makes two different sounds and apply flexibility when decoding oo words.45 minutes - 5
Vowel Patterns: ew and ue
Learn that ew and ue make the /oo/ sound (same as long oo).
Objective: Students will recognize that ew and ue make the /oo/ sound and decode words with these patterns.45 minutes - 6
Vowel Patterns: au and aw
Learn that au and aw make the /aw/ sound (as in saw, caught).

Comprehensive review of all diphthongs (oi/oy, ou/ow) and variant vowels (oo, ew, ue, au, aw).

Vowel Patterns: Fluency and Application
Apply all diphthong and variant vowel patterns in connected text reading.
Objective: Students will fluently read connected text containing diphthongs and variant vowels, demonstrating automatic pattern recognition and comprehension.45 minutes
