Greek Roots: Graph, Phon
Learn two Greek roots that appear in everyday vocabulary: 'graph' (write) and 'phon' (sound). Students will build word webs and use these roots to decode unfamiliar words.
Objective: Students will identify and apply the Greek roots 'graph' (write) and 'phon' (sound) to determine the meaning of words containing these roots.45 minutes - 3
Greek Roots: Scope, Bio, Auto
Learn three Greek roots: 'scope' (see/look at), 'bio' (life), and 'auto' (self). Students will see how these roots combine with each other and with previously learned roots.
Objective: Students will identify and apply the Greek roots 'scope' (see/look at), 'bio' (life), and 'auto' (self) to determine word meanings, including words that combine multiple roots.45 minutes - 4
Latin Roots: Dict, Scrib/Script
Learn two Latin roots: 'dict' (say/speak) and 'scrib/script' (write). Students will compare Latin 'scrib' with Greek 'graph' and see how Latin roots work in English.
Objective: Students will identify and apply the Latin roots 'dict' (say/speak) and 'scrib/script' (write) to determine word meanings, and compare Latin roots with previously learned Greek roots.45 minutes - 5
Latin Roots: Port, Struct
Learn two Latin roots: 'port' (carry) and 'struct' (build). Students will analyze how prefixes combine with these roots to create word families and distinguish between the homographs 'port' (carry) and 'port' (harbor).
Objective: Students will identify and apply the Latin roots 'port' (carry) and 'struct' (build) to determine word meanings, using prefix + root patterns to decode unfamiliar words.45 minutes - 6
Latin Roots: Ject, Tract
Learn two Latin roots that describe movement: 'ject' (throw) and 'tract' (pull/drag). Students will see how prefixes combine with these action roots to create words describing different directions of throwing and pulling.
Objective: Students will identify and apply the Latin roots 'ject' (throw) and 'tract' (pull/drag) to determine word meanings, understanding how prefixes indicate the direction or manner of the throwing/pulling action.45 minutes - 7
Combining Roots and Affixes
Build complex words by combining prefixes, roots, and suffixes. Students learn the formula prefix + root + suffix = meaning and apply it to multi-part words like transportation, predictable, and autobiography.
